The Sacramento Room opened to the public
in April of 1995 and is housed on the second floor of
the Central Library, providing access to six collections
on Sacramento County history and life. It includes city
directories and telephone books, local yearbooks, and
a periodical collection. The Sacramento Area Authors
Collection consists of books by and about authors who
have lived a formative or substantial part of their
lives in Sacramento. The California Collection encompasses
the history and life of California and includes journals,
diaries, and biographies of prominent figures in all
aspects of the state as well as information on the natural
history, culture, culture, and social life of California.
The Printing and Book Arts History Collection depicts
the history of books: including printing, binding, papermaking,
type design, and illustration. This collection has many
examples of printing by fine presses throughout the
world. The Special Collection includes materials which
require special handling and storage. Many of these
first edition, autographed books are kept in the Sacramento
Room's atmosphere-controlled vault. The Sacramento Public
Library Collection chronicles the history of local libraries
through publications, scrapbooks, ledgers, posters and
many other items.
