Summary
Only one pear per flatcar allowed when the bounty is this bodacious! Another exaggerated claim posted across the country helped cement the image of the Sacramento Valley as the cornucopia of California. Sacramento County, in 2004, was the state's leading pear producer. The Pear Fair has been held annually since 1982 in the river town of Courtland where Bartlett pears reign. Bartlett pears originated in England in the 17th century and came West in the covered wagons of the '49ers.
