Summary
This rosy-cheeked little grape hoarder was Southern Pacific Railroad's poster child for the multi-million dollar fruit and agriculture industry that literally fed the nation in 1908 when this brochure was printed. Filled with hyperbole extolling the virtues of fruit for health, diet, longevity and just about everything else, this pocket- and purse-sized pamphlet combined business with pleasure--the last part of the booklet is filled with creative recipes for just about every locally grown fruit imaginable, including three pages of tried and true ways to prepare prunes! It was a win-win situation, since the railroads flourished with the business fruit and produce growers provided and the railroad offered wider markets for Sacramento Valley harvests.
