The fancy prunes in this color picture may be French prunes, the first variety introduced to California late in 1856 commercially, but the origins of prunes in California go back to the California Missions years before. A year or two before this picture and article appeared in California's Magazine, the estimated production in prunes for the State was over 95,000 tons.
