W. R. Strong & Co.'s Capital Nurseries was one of six such businesses that advertised in the 1885/1886 Sacramento City Directory and they had already been supplying seeds, trees, fruit and general nursery stock to the Sacramento area for 30 years! Strong was already familiar to residents of the county when his first listing as a seed dealer appeared in the 1857 edition and he conducted business from at least three different locations in the heart of the city prior to 1886 as the American Seed Store. Capital Nursery, still used as a name in the nursery business in Sacramento though not related, bought and brokered dried fruit and nuts, honey, and general merchandise as well as trees, plants, and seeds.
