Electric passenger trains take the center of J Street in downtown Sacramento ca. 1908 while the buggies, wagons and carriages hug the side. Note the dress of the pedestrians pastelled for posterity on this postcard produced in Germany prior to WWI. The isolated laborer at work near the tracks evokes an era when gas was a by-product of the engine and fuel consisted of locally grown hay and vegetables.
